The abdomen is the posterior end of the three body regions of an adult insect. It is composed of 11 segments. The abdomen bears the external genitalia of the insect. In female insects these consist of an ovipositor. Each segment of the abdomen consists of a dorsal sclerite, tergum, and a ventral sclerite. Abdomen in insects is divided into three main areas: pregenital segments, genital segments, and postgenital segments. The pregenital segments include the first seven segments and are free from appendages in the adult phase. The genital segments include the ninth segment in males and carry genital appendages. In females, the paired appendages of the eighth and ninth abdominal segments fit together to form an egg-laying mechanism called the ovipositor. The postgenital segments include the tenth and eleventh segments and carry the two appendages, analcerci. The abdomen appendages include genital appendages and analcerci. The ovipositor is an organ used by insects for egg-laying.
