The movements of the stomach involve involuntary, rhythmic wavelike contractions called peristalsis, which move food through the digestive tract. The stomach has three divisions: the fundus, body, and antrum. The fundus and proximal body receive ingested food, while the caudad portion mixes food with gastric secretions and pushes it towards the small intestine. The vagovagal reflex allows the stomach to accommodate more food by decreasing muscular tone. The movements of the stomach include weak peristaltic waves called 'Mixing' waves, which intensify from the body towards the antrum, pushing food towards the pylorus. Retropulsion is a backward movement of food.
